Kenya Constitutional Reform

Christian Lawyers Opposed to the proposed constitution

Christian lawyers have opposed proposed new constitution.

The lawyers asked Kenyans not to sacrifice their moral values for of a new law. They insist the amendments should have been done before the referendum.

Chairperson of the Kenya Christian Lawyers Fellowship Ann Mbugua said it will be almost impossible to make any changes to the proposed law if it passed at the referendum.

For example, counties will be constituted after 2012 and that means for any amendment to be done, it will have to wait for 2012. Same case applies to the issue of abortion.

Though they like the governance reforms the new constitution will bring, they will be forced to reject it because they have no other option.

South African advocate Teresa Conradie also urged Kenyans not to vote for the proposed law.

Giving an example from her own country, she said "Make sure that it will not be necessary to make amendments to the constitution very soon. The South African constitution was adopted in 1997 and 13 years later there have been no significant successful amendments. It would be naïve for Kenyans to believe that it will be easy to change things,"
